The morning bus from the Denali Park entrance got us to Anchorage around 2. We checked into the Sheraton and then decided that we were hungry. Humpy’s (named after the salmon that have made it up stream and are not good to eat, or their other restaurant in Hawaii of the same name, but named for the humpback whale) was the restaurant of choice. It was near the hotel and a true local spot. Delicious halibut tacos!
Dinner was a the Glacier Brewhouse. Kelley had made reservations for us before we left home. The food was tasty, however, the best food we had in Anchorage was a Simon and Seafort’s. If ever in Anchorage, don not miss it!

The Good: Seeing the top of Mt. McKinley on the way to Denali Park.

The Good:Seeing the top of Mt. McKinley on the way to Denali Park.

Thrilling to see this mountain; many people spend a week in Denali and never see it.
The Bad: Where there is dampness and now breeze in Danali, there are mosquitoes.

And the Ugly!
Flooded lodge
Our last night there, it rained constantly. The river that runs by the Lodge grew to the point that it flooded the grounds of the lodge. We were leaving that morning, but we only got .5 miles from the lodge, because:
The Bad: Flooded Denali Backcounrty Lodge.
After 10 hours on sitting on the bus, (the Lodge staff kept us fed and informed) the Forestry Department came and in and flew us to buses on the other side of the slide are, 4 people at a time, and there were 36 of us!
rescue
The trip was filled with great hikes, wild life (brown bears, eagles, caribou, Dall sheep and moose!), nice people and good food. A great back country adventure.
After a 5.5 hour bus ride out of the Park, we arrived back at the entrance to Denali at 2 and spent the night in the Denali Village, eagerly looking forward to our 5.5 hour ride to Anchorage – tomorrow, well, really today!

Friday morning Kelley and I start the adventure. We are flying to Ketchikan, spend the night and then fly on to Anchorage. After one night there we will take the domed train to Denali where we will head for the backcountry lodge. If I am able, I will post.

We have been watching the movements of Lady K. I think that the weather is cooperating. Lady K has AIS and we have been following her progress. Here is the link we are using, an account is free and then you can put Lady K in your fleet and always find her.

Yesterday was the day that we on the Lady K were looking forward to, however, Mother Nature squashed our plans. The reservations to Seattle were cancelled.

The boat has been unable to leave the dock and begin its trip north. The waves and wind have been too strong…today Chuck said that when there is an opportunity to start, Tim will get to Monterey and wait for another opportunity to go on.

Because of the uncertainty and our reservations to visit Denali, Kelley and I are flying on the 20th to Ketchikan; on the 21st we will fly to Anchorage and then begin the trip to Denali. Now our hope is that the boat will be in Alaska by the 28th, when our side-trip is finished.

Thanks a lot, Mother.
